Interning at MGP

June 13, 2018

Taking on your first internship in any industry is a vital step in building your career, but the process can be a bit daunting. I heard nightmare after nightmare of interns being taken advantage of, asked to work long hours, not receiving credit for work they’ve done and the list goes on!  Fortunately, that’s not my experience. Interning at MGP has been nothing short of amazing. When I first came into the position, I was nervous, and a bit intimidated as everyone on the staff was well established in the industry and confident in their work.

The fear and feeling that I was in over my head quickly dissipated as I got to know the team. Though I was just an intern, the senior team worked closely with me to ensure that I was not only learning, but made to feel a part of the team. I was surprised that I was invited to participate in the company offsite, though I was excited they asked me to join, I was beyond nervous! Once again, that uneasiness subsided as soon as we meet up in the morning. I had a chance to not only bond with the team, but they also allowed me the opportunity to contribute ideas during the strategy meeting. This event set the precedence for the remainder of my MGP internship. I had structure, but also the freedom to be creative and empowered to share ideas.

I was blessed with the opportunity to learn the ropes of day-to-day public relations operations and got a grasp of what it takes to make it in this industry. I was granted opportunities to do creative writing, handle internal social media projects, draft award submissions and a plethora of other tasks I never thought I would be trusted to do as an intern. In addition to ensuring that I was learning and progressing, my CEO and Senior Account Director took time out of their schedules to meet up for happy hour to celebrate my graduation, how many interns can say they got to have drinks with their CEO!? They went out of their way to emphasize care toward team members of all levels; you are not just another cog in the machine at MGP!

Above all, I could not have asked for a better intern experience. Though the work was challenging some days and I would grow frustrated with myself, I acquired several invaluable skills such as time management, critical thinking and being detailed oriented. I am proud to be an MGP intern and will forever value my experience.
