#BalanceForBetter – What International Women’s Day Means To Us
March 8, 2019
Forty-four years ago, March 8th was crowned as a day to celebrate women everywhere; their achievements, triumphs, milestones and more. As a team of talented, passionate, driven women, at International Women’s Day holds a special day in our hearts here at MGP.
Women worldwide have made incredible sacrifices and rewritten the course of history through their efforts in career, community, family and more. Today, we want to reflect on what International Women’s Day means to us:
Mindy M. Hull:
IWD shines a light on women, but fostering relationships with a diverse group of people – women included – and being a strong mentor and catalyst for change is what will push us forward as a better and more enlightened society. I’m grateful for the women in my life – the wonderful colleagues I get to work with, my friends far and near, and my sister. When we support another woman, we are not only lifting up one of us, we are lifting up all of us.
Natalee Gibson:
It’s exciting to see International Women’s Day grow in participation and importance every year, though I look forward to the day when it is no longer necessary to spend a day advancing the causes of women. As a parent of both a son and a daughter, I hope we can avoid swinging the pendulum too far in one direction to make up for past mistakes, but instead recognize the value of each individual regardless of gender, race or any number of biases we may hold. While IWD certainly celebrates women, for me it represents a larger opportunity to increase our awareness and sensitivity of our need for greater diversity, and champion the underdog in any situation regardless of the color of their skin, their personal beliefs, their culture or background, or their gender.
Jenn Johnston:
International Women’s Day is significant for women everywhere, and in every time period -whether the past, present or future. As women, we have the right to vote because of the women who came before us. We’re entrepreneurs and businesswomen today because of past generations who broke the glass ceiling and fought to be the first women in a male-dominated workforce. It’s important we remember and honor the women who came before us
As women today, it’s essential we continue to fight for women’s rights, and support and celebrate each other and our achievements. Never before have women enjoyed so much success and freedom, but there are still many women among us, all over the world, that don’t enjoy the privileges they deserve. We need to continue to do better for them and future generations. I think International Women’s Day helps us all remember we’re in this together, and a little “girl power” can go a long way!
Allie Gavin:
Us women are notorious for striving to be perfect in all aspects of our life, while at work or at home. In Lean In, Sheryl Sandberg said one of her favorite mottos is ‘Done is better than perfect.’ While as PR professionals we always strive to deliver excellent work to our clients and our colleagues, it’s a good reminder to not second guess ourselves and have confidence in our abilities – I hope to teach this to my two little girls. The most important thing is to show up and put our best foot forward. International Women’s Day is a great reminder to celebrate our accomplishments and take pride in hard work!
Frances Lee:
I celebrate the women in my life every day, today I recognize them louder and with so many other voices. I truly believe that an individual’s support can help create a turning point that impacts your life, whether that be your mom, a close girlfriend, a sibling, or mentor. I look forward to making the time to foster these relationships more and more and who knows – when we empower each other, anything is possible!
Tara Hill:
I’m grateful to the amazing women who have helped shape my life – family, teachers, coaches, friends, coworkers, etc. In contrast to many women throughout history who have labored to pave the bright road ahead, I have been blessed to be surrounded by encouraging role models and enjoy empowering environments. My parents taught me I could accomplish anything I was willing to work for. Today we celebrate International Women’s Day and recognize the sacrifices, strength, influence and passion of women throughout history and in our lives right now. With so much to be grateful for, I hope you’ll give one of your female heroes a hug today – I know I will.
Hannah Martin:
I am grateful we live in a time where being a woman is celebrated. I am grateful for the many women who came before that fought to earn the rights of women all around the world. I am grateful for those still fighting to do so. International Women’s Day is a day to remember how far we have come and where we can go. We need to continue to work hard so that women of the future can continue to grow and learn as we have.
