Five April Fool’s Tech and Business Day Pranks That Will Make You LOL
April 5, 2019
April Fool’s Day has a long history of bad pranks offset by equally hilarious antics. In the words of Harry Potter – the beloved day of “mischief managed” – has long stood the test of time. Even before the advent of the digital age or the days of viral social media, people pulled pranks and plotted new schemes. Yes, love it or hate it, April Fool’s Day is all about learning to let go and laugh.
Here at MGP, we have learned to chuckle with both the good and bad. After all, we work in a fast-paced, demanding industry where letting off a little steam is a much-needed respite from the everyday grind. We love a good April Fool’s Day prank. In honor of this week’s fun day, we’re spotlighting some of our favorite April Fool’s Day tech and business pranks from around the web.
1. Tinder introduces height verification. Dating already comes with its own comedy of errors, but dating app Tinder took it to a whole new level. Playing upon people’s penchant to exaggerate the truth, they introduced a new height verification tool. If you are ‘vertically challenged,’ you’ll find this equally hilarious and disconcerting.
2. WestJet Launches #FlyreFestival. Taking flight meets frank fun with WetJet’s FlyreFestival. Get your emotional support animal out, and check out their take on flying the friendly skies. A hilarious take on today’s music festival culture, this April Fool’s prank will leave you laughing while making you wish flying were a party.
3. Screen Cleaner by Google. Tired of cleaning your phone? Google’s got an app for that. Google did a great job incorporating their Files App into a fun, lighthearted ad highlighting the ease of organization and cleanliness. You’ll appreciate the dedication it took to put together an ad about something so close to believable. This prank just might leave you wishing it was true.
4. Invisible Dog Aligners. As if trying to put something into your dog’s mouth isn’t already a foray into the unknown, Smile Direct Club managed to skew people’s love of pets into a new marketing product. If you’ve ever had to pay a vet dental cleaning bill, this one might make you think about launching a new company.
5. Taco Bell Buys the Liberty Bell. This April’s Fool prank is an oldie but a goody. Probably one of the funniest pranks of all times, Taco Bell managed to fool millions into thinking they were going to buy The Liberty Bell and rename it the Taco Bell Liberty Bell. If you are a PR pro, you can imagine the publicity value here. This prank might just leave you wishing it was Taco Tuesday.
As PR pros we get to be creative every day, but we love the creativity of these April Fool’s pranks and are already looking forward to next year!
