PR Superheroes

October 29, 2019

Do you have phenomenal cosmic powers? Are your skills super-powered? Public relations – like any good business – requires the right mix of passion and skills. And while you might not realize it, sometimes what you see as ordinary is what makes the extraordinary.

PR is all about making things happen. That means fighting ‘battles’ such as getting clients front and center with the press, finding new strategies that map back to overall success, and a willingness to make sure our clients are the heroes of the story. We might seem ordinary, but we work every day so our clients get the extraordinary credit they deserve.

At MGP, you could say we like to supercharge our client’s products and brands, utilizing the right skill sets and powers to make a ‘Splash,’ ‘Boom’ or ‘Pow.’ So as PR pros, who do we relate to in the superhero world, and why?

Mindy Captain Marvel: Carol Danvers is highly competitive and has a “never say die” mentality and spirit throughout her life from the time she was a little girl. When people told her she couldn’t do or be something, she made up her mind to do and be anything she wanted and worked hard to get there. Having a “never say die” attitude is important in PR. We need to leave no stone unturned to find unique story angles that produce media coverage for clients and come up with creative and different ways to tell their stories. Throughout her journey, Carol/Vers/Captain Marvel is very protective of and loyal to her friends and family and a champion of the underdog. Like Captain Marvel, I am loyal to our team and our clients – who are part of our PR family – plus, I love a good David vs. Goliath story. Thanos who?

Justin Ant-Man: He can shrink to minuscule size to see worlds hidden to the human eye. Doing a good job for clients is about mastering the small details everyone else misses.

Allie Storm – In PR, we are charged with “making noise” or causing a storm around everything from major breaking news announcements to more nuanced creative story angles, where we cull through raw data to find an interesting gem or that perfect soundbite for media. I only wish we had the power to control the weather to ensure a slow news day!

Jenn Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix: Some days, PR is a battle between light and dark. PR is a balancing act between handling long days and stress offset by phenomenal days where the perfect strategy comes together to put clients center-stage with media. It’s a balancing act. Just like this superhero who can read minds, I also try to anticipate my teammates’ and clients’ needs and use my “pseudo” mind-reading ability to action those needs before they ever ask. Jean Grey and the Dark Phoenix (even at her most vulnerable and craziest times) are fiercely loyal — something I admire and value highly in my professional and personal life. I will fight for those I love, and that includes my clients and their brands. I guess you could say I am ‘super’ devoted to my job and the clients we work with — and I am proud of that ‘power.’

Frances – Like The Wasp, I approach my roles in PR with heroic aspirations, intelligence, and charisma. My strong morals, coupled with my ability to voice my opinion tactfully, allows clients to trust me. My discerning eye and intuition make for seamless integration as I quickly pinpoint where I will be most beneficial. The Wasp in her ability to shrink and fly as well as grow to giant proportions compares with my resilience and flexibility: two key components of working in PR.

Erin Katherine Anne “Kitty” Pryde/ Shadowcat, as someone who can move through walls and ‘blend in,’ this skill is one of the oldest tenants of PR. If we are doing our job correctly, we are telling stories, making connections, securing coverage and giving our clients everything they expect, all behind the scenes. Everything we do is for our clients, and we make sure to do it without being in the spotlight.

Olivia Oracle is a superhero that is known for her strength and power to tackle anything that comes her way. She uses her intelligence and unique skill sets to be Batman’s eyes and ears as he saves the world. As Public Relations professionals, we do the same for our clients. We use our intelligence and resources to be their center of information and make sure that nothing gets in the way of their success.

CarlaElastigirl (Incredibles) I relate to Elastagirl because in PR you have to be flexible. You also have to be able to handle multiple things at once, often under immense pressure. It can be easy to let things get on top of you and hit a wall, but managing stress and your workload efficiently is super important in the PR world. I try to stay focused on one thing at a time, be organized, prioritize my workload, as well as have a positive mindset to make sure I am as productive as possible.
