Applying For PR Or Client Awards? Don’t Forget These Four Crucial Steps

September 05, 2022

It’s hard to believe but summer is over and we are cruising into the fall. As the year slowly winds down it’s prime time to submit for awards – both for clients and on behalf of your agency. With the rise of digital PR there are more awards to pursue than ever. With that said, some things are crucial to remember if you are shooting for awards this year. Here are MGP’s four timeless tips for a successful award submissions.

Follow Instructions:  We know you’ve done good work and want to tell the world about it. We know you want to get into the details of that work, too. With that said, make sure you follow the award application instructions to a tee. If a section calls for 200 words don’t send 210. If a section requires that you check one box, don’t check two. Awards judges – whether for pr awards or the countless categories of awards client can pursue – are inundated. Help them do their jobs. If you make their jobs harder your application is likely to be overlooked.

Be Specific: The more specific your answers are, the better your chances. Judges sort though hundreds if not thousands of applications to pick finalists. If they can visualize what you’re talking about you have a better shot. Generic answers and applications don’t get anywhere.

Pick An Outside Proofreader: This proofreader should have nothing to do with writing the awards submission and should be able to look at an application with fresh eyes. People involved with writing and collecting information for an award are too close to it. Designate an outsider to insure a quality, error free submission.

Don’t Pester Judges: If you submitted your application correctly and followed instructions it will get reviewed and you will be notified when there is a result. Don’t get impatient – even if a client is bugging you. You don’t want to risk the chance that repeat calls or emails to judges make them look at your work unfavorably.
