Remember Female Entrepreneurs and Founders on International Women’s Day

March 08, 2023

It’s International Women’s Day, a global day to celebrate women’s achievements, raise awareness about discrimination and take action to drive gender parity. This day is special for MGP because we were founded by a woman (yours truly) and have women in prominent roles throughout our agency.

One of our core strengths is the wisdom and perspective our diversity gives us. While other PR agencies talk about empowerment, our agency and business success were built on empowerment and trusting in women to do exceptional work. Our team makes us special.

At the same time, I recognize we have a long way to go. Since this year’s theme is #EmbraceEquality I want to talk about female founders and entrepreneurs, particularly in the start-up world. Female founders still face bias. Women throughout the tech industry also experience bias. Far too often I hear stories of women executives who are questioned far more than their male peers, who are underfunded or ignored despite brilliant ideas, or who feel undermined because they are female entrepreneurs.

Consider just a few facts:

  • A staggering 35% of female entrepreneurs say they’ve experienced gender bias when raising capital. Women entrepreneurs that do raise funds report that they raise 5% less than their male counterparts.
  • Sexism is so problematic in Silicon Valley, the global hub of start-up culture, that it’s been explored many times in books, on TV and in magazine articles. Despite attention to the problem, venture capital and start-up culture are rife with sexism.
  • The tech industry has a pronounced gender gap and women are pessimistic about their future in the industry.

None of this is acceptable. Sexism still holds women back as they seek to build businesses that can thrive and change the world. When women can’t raise funds, are shut out of meetings or experience harassment, or when they quit a job because they feel like they can’t have a family, we all suffer. Look at what MGP has achieved due to female empowerment: we’ve helped more than 40 companies to a successful exit, helped give birth to multiple unicorns, netted our clients extensive tier one media coverage and awards around the world, and have provided a home for up-and-coming female PR talent

It’s time for the industry to get behind female founders, entrepreneurs and women working in tech. We’ve been here forever and have already changed the world. Imagine what we could do with a level playing field and no glass ceiling..
