Three Reasons Why I Chose PR for My Summer Internship

June 13, 2023

As an incoming junior from University of Southern California seeking a summer internship, the possibilities were endless and overwhelming. I love my major in communication. The curriculum is dynamic and opens the door for my future career. Nonetheless, I felt uncertain on what direction I should take with my internship.

During the past year I discovered the topics of marketing, content creation and branding interested me. I added a marketing minor, started doing social media for my school’s media center and enrolled in courses like marketing fundamentals, communication and social media. These experiences helped me realize I wanted a summer internship experience that had some aspects of marketing and content creation.

The first spark of interest I had with PR was on a call with a family friend doing freelance PR. Not only did she rave about her clients and the skills that she acquired, but she also spoke with such genuine passion about her career. I was curious to learn more. After doing some research, I realized that the PR industry is everything I have been searching for and more. Here are three reasons why:

1. The Applications Are Vast.
Public relations is a multi-dimensional field that covers a wide range of areas and skills. At its core, PR involves managing the relationship between a company, its public and its stakeholders. Managing a PR relationship involves media relations, crisis communications, analyst relations, content marketing, social media, and many other types of PR. PR also involves press releases, brainstorming, strong writing and other skill sets. What I love about PR is that there are so many different avenues to learn about and explore.

2. PR Breaks Through the Noise.
It can be challenging to understand new or different brands with all the noise happening online — especially with the increase of digital media. PR is incredibly important to distinguish brands, increase their awareness, build their credibility and reputation, and establish trust. PR can help highlight brands that want to make a positive impact on the environment or shine a light on important global concerns and causes. I came into the University of Southern California as an environmental studies major and still maintain an interest in all things related to preserving and protecting our planet. At MGP, I love that in addition to spearheading some of the latest and greatest technologies, the firm also promotes emerging technologies in sustainability.

3. PR Requires Creativity and Problem-Solving.
An aspect of PR that I admire is its ever-evolving nature that fosters skills in ingenuity and
flexibility. Each brand and client have distinct challenges and scenarios that need creative, new solutions. There is no “one size fits all” with PR and I find that exciting. There are different ways to approach PR situations and I like that I can apply my own thinking. Working in PR is a dynamic, challenging field, but is also one in which I am ready to crack open and dive deeper.

While I am uncertain what my exact future career path will entail, gaining experience at a PR firm such as MGP will help me envision what my career path could become. Regardless, the skills and knowledge I will gain through my PR internship will be transferable to other opportunities and invaluable for my professional development.

MGP is a dynamic PR firm that has senior talent to help your company break through the noise and also provides opportunities for the best young minds in PR and communications. Want to learn more? Get in touch at hello@wearemgp.com
